On-Line and Off-Line Operation

As mentioned before, the branch server operates in real-time when on-line, connecting the host computer directly or via intermediate servers in the whole network. Central records are updated as processing occurs in the branch. Each branch has access to the most up- to-date information. It also provides off-line processing to ensure continuous customer service in the event the host fails or is unavailable.

On-Line Processing

In this operating condition, it can deliver the following important capabilities:

Account Setup and Transaction Processing

The system automatically sends account setup and transaction data to the host. Once the transaction is completed and logged at the branch server, the system sends the appropriate message to the host. The branch system’s communication method follows the rules of the host environment, normally requiring no changes at the host. This approach reduces the processing burden on the host and improves overall network throughput.

Host Inquiry

The system’s host inquiry feature can be used to access host account data for use in the branch. It can automatically initiate the request, store the response, and use the data to pre-fill screens. A typical use would be to access customer and account data to pre-fill a new account data collection screen.  F@ST™BDS takes efficient use of existing resources by reducing the amount of keyboard data entry. Use of host account data also reduces the chance of error and speeds up processing, increasing customer satisfaction.

Off-Line Processing

The branch system continues to function whether the host is on-line or off-line. If the host is down or unavailable, no local functions are impaired – only those functions and transactions that require host interaction (such as a balance inquiry) are unavailable. This capability ensures that, should the host or host communications lines go down, customer service and branch reporting are uninterrupted. It also provides the flexibility of enabling the system to run off-line during periods of peak host activity.

Setting Operating Mode

A simple menu-driven command places the system in host (on-line) or local (off-line) modes. The supervisor can set the modes of operation for the whole branch or individual workstation. Each workstation user can also set its own operating mode. On-screen message is displayed by the system, indicating whether the host is on-line. In the F@ST™BDS  co-existent configuration, a supervisor can place the entire branch in off-line mode.

Store and Forward

Transaction data to be forwarded to the host is recorded in the  F@ST™BDS branch Server with a notation of whether or not the transaction has been successfully logged at the host. Re-entry of transactions processed while the system was off-line is driven from the server and does not interfere with live transaction processing so that customer service is not interrupted.


The updating of off-line transactions to the host is initiated automatically by the system upon resumption of host communications, or manually by the branch supervisor. Transactions rejected by the host can be later identified, corrected, and resent.

Supervisor Functions

F@ST™BDS makes it easy for user to manage the branch system for the day-to-day operation due to changes of operational considerations. A set of Supervisor Functions is included to allow authorized branch personnel to keep the system up-to-date. These functions also include device assignment and purging of old records from the system.


The specific Supervisor Functions provided by the Application Packages include:

  • Assignment of workstation peripherals

  • Maintenance of operator sign-on records and authority levels

  • Purging of journal records

These operations are accessible only to authorized personnel. Access to these functions can be tailored in accordance with the user’s operational requirements.

Workstation Peripheral Assignment Function

F@ST™BDS is a true distributed processing system that enables users to access resources anywhere on the branch network. This function is used to select which peripheral devices (printers, PIN Pads, reader devices, etc.) will be used by each workstation. These peripherals can be attached to any workstation on the network; users are not limited to using only those peripherals attached to their own workstations.

This gives the users the freedom to share system resources such as printers, PIN Pad etc. It also provides a convenient way to change device when it fails.

Device assignments are easy to establish. Valid peripheral types are selected from a pick-list of available devices. The system automatically checks to make sure all device assignments are valid and displays an error message if a problem has encountered.

Maintaining Operator Records and Authorities

The Operator Maintenance Functions allow user to define who can log onto the system and what applications and operations the authorized person can perform. The system maintains an Operator Profile record for each operator defined in the system. The Operator Profile record contains the following information:

  • Operator ID

  • Full name

  • Branch number

  • Authority level

  • Cash minimum

  • Cash maximum

  • Check cashing limit

The Operator Maintenance Functions enable authorized supervisory personnel to create, modify, and delete these records. The specific maintenance functions supported by the system include:

Add Operator Profile: Defines a new operator to the system.

Modify Operator Profile: Allows the supervisor to edit the records of an existing operator.

Remove Operator Profile: Used to permanently delete an operator from the system. Operators who are currently log-on cannot be removed. Removing an operator's record will have no effect on transactions that were processed by that operator.

Clear Operator Password: It enables a supervisor to clear a user's password if the operator forgets his or her password. At no time can the supervisor set or see the user's password; only the individual operator knows his or her password.

Show Operator Status: It displays a list of all operators that are authorized to use the system. It also lists each operator's authorities, operator and branch IDs, and whether or not they are currently logged-on to the system.

Purging Journal Records

F@ST™BDS provides file management utilities that allow authorized supervisory personnel to purge old journal records that are no longer needed in the branch. The system asks the supervisor for the date before which records are to be deleted. All records dated before this date are purged. The system will not purge pending records or those not posted to the host. File purging procedures can be tailored to the user operational procedures.

Override Processing

Each time a user accesses a function or processes a transaction, the system checks against the Operator Profile record to ensure that the user has the proper authorization. If the user lacks the authority, the system notifies the user and automatically prevents the transaction from proceeding. The operator has the option to cancel the transaction or request an override.

To request an override, the operator simply presses the OVERRIDE key. The F@ST™BDS system then displays a message on the supervisor's screen indicating that an override request is pending. The system supports both remote and local supervisor overrides; the system displays a pick-list for the supervisor to choose whether the override will be local or remote. All override transactions are sent to the electronic journal.

Remote Override

If the supervisor chooses to perform a remote override, the system displays a screen listing the operator who originated the request along with a brief message from the originator. At this point, the supervisor has the option to view the requester's video, grant the request, deny the request, or place the request on hold and make other inquiries before deciding.

The supervisor can view the contents of the originating workstation's display on his or her own monitor. This ability to remotely view another workstation's display allows the supervisor to see the actual screen where the override is required, as well as any relevant transaction data (such as a check amount and the account number it is being drawn against).

The supervisor grants or denies the request by selecting the appropriate action from a menu. The supervisor can also send a brief message to the originating workstation to explain the decision. Holding the transaction allows the supervisor to continue with other tasks or go over to the originator's workstation and processes the request as a local override.

Local Override

A supervisor can perform a local override at the requesting workstation. The supervisor performs a local override by going over to the requesting workstation and pressing the OVERRIDE key. This will display a pop-up window for the supervisor to enter his or her ID and password. If the supervisor has the proper authority, the override will be granted and the transaction can proceed.
